Some time ago, I wrote that the three things retired people be concerned about most is wealth, health and relationships. Speaking personally, I genuinely believe that wealth, or running out of money occupies the most truly effective spot on older retired people’s minds and health is just a close second. Part of the reason is that advances in health care and changes in attitude have caused it to be feasible for us to reside and stay active more than ever. The serious problem with health is to stay fit and strong enough to savor being active and keep our immune systems running at peak efficiency.
Fitness for older folks
Staying fit, this is the problem. Being retired means you can sleep and work around you want. And it gets simpler to take a seat on the porch as we get older. At my last physical, my doctor said it had been never too late to get active and increase my strength and stamina. He’s probably right.
Think about this; It’s not just how long you’ve been alive which make you old, it’s the possible lack of activity and a great positive attitude as you age. Research has shown time and again which our sedentary lifestyles are harmful to our health and that active people enjoy life and age better with fewer health problems.

Based on the CDC, swimming and other water-based workouts are safe and effective regardless of one’s age. I read one study that indicated that older adults who swam were 33 percent less inclined to fall, a major reason for injury in older people 70. I’m unsure how they arrive at these statistics, but anything that increases strength and muscle tone has to help.
If “strength training” or “going to the gym” conjures images of young body builders pumping iron, it’s time and energy to rethink this type of exercise and look at the benefits that may be gained including confidence, better sleep and stronger muscles and bones. Articles on the CDC website suggest weight training might help relieve arthritis pain and lower an older persons likelihood of a fall. Weight training programs could be tailored to fit folks of all ages and abilities. Strength training can be a safe and effective exercise for older adults but we have to be careful and not over extend ourselves once we start out. Check out some kettle bell exercises and use low weights in order to avoid sore muscles.
Or just common walking helps people connect with nature, excersice and enjoy the advantages of being outdoors and getting together with other people. Older people are doing sets from charity walk/run events to tackling the Appalachian Trail. A well earned sense of independence is at the very top the listing of benefits for most hikers. Nature offers an escape from every day stress and encourages longer periods of activity than the usual walk around the area can. Other health benefits include better heart health, circulation, mobility and a low risk of hospitalization.
Join a Sports League
This 1 could be a a bit more difficult. But, if you do not like exercising on your own, the teamwork of organized sports may be just the ticket to raised health. Adult sports leagues all around the world offer sets from basketball to softball. Whatever your sport of choice is, there is a good chance you will find others playing in your town, so join up and reap the physical and mental benefits and make some new friends at the exact same time.
